Overview
Johnson-Woodford Company was originally incorporated in 1980 by Nevin
W. Mann, CCFE(1). After serving in various executive roles for a
Fortune 100 company, Nevin founded the consulting practice with a focus
on management process, employee and executive leadership development,
customer service, and marketing and sales management. These areas
remain core competencies of the firm, almost 30 years hence.
In the late 1980s, Nevin joined the Hay Group, an international
consulting firm, bringing his clients to Hay and becoming a Senior
Management Consultant, heading up Hay's sales and marketing practice in
the Eastern U.S.
In the early 1990s, Nevin became directly associated with the deathcare
industry, as General Manager of St. Michael's Cemetery in New York
City. Most recently, he was President and CEO of the West Laurel Hill
Cemetery Company, which was in a turnaround situation. During his
tenure, the funeral service business attained market leadership, with
revenue increasing more than two and one-half times in eight years.
Similar sales results were achieved in the cemetery segment. Some
achievements received national industry recognition.
More than thirty new and innovative programs were initiated at West
Laurel Hill to improve customer service and product quality, sales,
marketing communications, Internet presence, and community relations.
Additional market-leading initiatives included an improved and
innovative sales process, the developing and offering of a scattering
memorialization option, the first U.S. combination offering of green
funerals and a green burial section, a veterans section, and improved
monument and mausoleum marketing.
In 2009, Nevin re-established Johnson-Woodford, to serve the deathcare
industry fulltime. (1) Certified Cemetery and Funeral Executive (CCFE)
is designated by peer recognition by the International Cemetery,
Funeral, and Cremation Association.
Engagement Approach and Collaboration
Nevin Mann is the principal management consultant at Johnson-Woodford.
He oversees all major assignments, calling on assistance from Alliance
Partners, who provide supplemental functional expertise and their
knowledge and experience to quality check findings and recommendations.

Nevin Mann is the Founder and Chairman of
Johnson-Woodford Company, a consulting firm with expertise in funeral
and cemetery management. The firm, originally incorporated in 1980, was
merged into the Hay Group in 1986, at which time Nevin became a Senior
Consultant and Director of the Hay Sales Effectiveness Practice in the
Northeast U.S. Following seventeen years of executive line management
of cemeteries and funeral homes, the firm was re-established in 2009 to
provide assistance to clients in addressing contemporary issues of
growth and management in the deathcare industry.
Nevin's consulting experience has included a wide variety of sales,
marketing and general management engagements. Industry groups assisted
include deathcare and memorialization, medical and pharmaceutical, high
technology industries, consumer packaged goods, telecommunications, and
business and financial services.
Career Highlights
Nevin has over 35 years of line and staff business management
experience. Most recently, he was President & CEO of West Laurel
Hill Cemetery Companies, where he managed a turnaround and developed
extraordinary growth and expansion over an eight-year period. At West
Laurel Hill, he designed, developed, and implemented more than thirty
new and innovative programs to improve customer service and product
quality, sales, marketing communications, Internet presence, and
community presence. The collection of companies managed include: Laurel
Hill Cemetery, a National Landmark in Philadelphia; West Laurel Hill
Cemetery; R.R. Bringhurst Funeral Home; and the J.H. Turner Funeral
Home in Bala Cynwyd.
Earlier deathcare management experience was acquired by leading another
turnaround situation at St. Michael’s Cemetery in New York City.
Earlier, Fortune 100 Company experience included being Director of
Sales and Marketing Services for S.B. Thomas, Inc. (Thomas' English
Muffins), an affiliate of The Best Foods Company; and a multinational
consumer package goods company. Nevin also served on the Thomas
Management Board. While at Best Foods, he held positions of Division
Sales Manager, Division Director of Personnel, and Corporate Director
of Manpower Resources.
Community Service Nevin's service to the
community has included leadership positions on the following
boards of
directors: Lower
Merion Public Access Television (Founding Member); Liberty Lutheran Services (Executive
Committee); Mary J. Drexel Home (Chair); Village at Penn
State (Vice-Chair);Woodland Cemetery in Stamford, CT (Board Member) ;
The Pennsylvania Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association (First VP);
International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association (Board
Member); and the President's Council of Common Cause.
Background
Nevin received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance from The
Pennsylvania State University and earned an M.B.A. from Fairleigh
Dickinson, New Jersey. He is also a graduate of the Senior Seminar in
General Management, the SMEI Graduate School of Sales Management and
Marketing, and the American Cemetery Association Graduate Program for
Executives. The ICCFA has recognized Nevin with the designation of
Certified Cemetery and Funeral Executive.
